Justification of significant contribution to the development of the relevant field of knowledge:  V. A. Khilko made a significant contribution to the development of neurosurgical science. In the field of vascular neurosurgery, V. A. Khilko developed methods of diagnostics and surgical treatment of various aneurysms and artery sinus anastomoses of the brain, as well as ischemic brain disease. V. A. Khilko made a contribution to the development of intravascular methods of surgery of aneurysms and carotid-cavernous anastomoses. V. A. Khilko has the priority in the development of the method of embolization through the vertebral-basilar system by using the “controlled” cobalt ferrite emboli in a magnetic field. For the first time in St. Petersburg, V. A. Khilko applied the method of transcranial Doppler sonography to study the various parameters of cerebral circulation including the reactivity of brain vessels.
